Piero Fassino is a member of the Chamber of Deputies.
Elected for the first time in 1994, re-elected in all legislatures until 2011 - when he became mayor of Turin (2011-2016) - and again elected to Parliament in 2018 and 2022. He is Vice-President of the Defense Commission of the Chamber of Deputies. He is President of the Italy-France Interparliamentary Group and of the Committee for the Coordination of Relations between the Chamber of Deputies and the Assembleé Nationale. He is President of the Commission of the Council of Europe for compliance with the obligations and commitments of the member states (Monitoring Commission). He was State Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1996-98 Prodi Government) with responsibility for Europe, the Mediterranean and international organizations and also with responsibility for European Community Policies at the Presidency of the Council; Minister of Foreign Trade (1998-2000 D'Alema Government); Minister of Justice, (2000-01 Amato Government). He was President of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chamber of Deputies (2020/2022) after having been Vice President (2018/2020) Member of the PCI National Secretariat since 1987, he was one of the young leaders who, led by Achille Occhetto, made the transition from the PCI to the Democratic Party of the Left - PDS (1989-91). From 1991 to 1996 he held the position of International Secretary of the PDS, guiding it in joining the Socialist International and in the foundation of the European Socialist Party. From 1994 to 2011 he was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. From 2001 to 2007 Leader of the Democrats of the Left (DS), the main Italian party of the progressive front. In 2007 one of the founders of the Democratic Party (PD), born from the merger between the DS and other centre-left political formations. He is currently a member of the Directorate of the PD. From 2007 to 2011 Special Envoy of the European Union for Burma. From 2011 to 2016 Mayor of Turin and from 2013 to 2016 President of the Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI). From 2014 to March 2020 President of the Socialist Group at the Congress of Local Authorities of the Council of Europe and spokesman for the Mediterranean of the same Congress. In his institutional and political roles he has gained extensive knowledge of the issues of the European Union, the Balkans, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Africa, South-East Asia and Latin America. In 2010 he received the America Award from the Italy-USA Foundation. In 2013, President Hollande awarded him the Legion d'Honneur. Author of several books and publications, he is Honorary President of CeSPI, Center for International Politics Studies and member of the Steering Committee of the Italian section of the European Movement. |
